Members of the House of Representatives take photographs with their phones as President Barack Obama Affordable Health Care for America Act during a ceremony Tuesday morning with fellow Democrats in the East Room of the White House. The landmark bill was passed by the House of Representatives Sunday after a 14-month-long political battle that left the legislation without a single Republican vote.
Obama also tweeted the following:
“Tonight’s vote is not a victory for any one party – it is a victory for the American people. Tonight, we answered the call of history.” The legislation extends health care to millions of uninsured Americans, a proposal dating back to Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, and marks the largest federal health care guarantees since Medicare and Medicaid were enacted over forty years ago.
